Back in Town

I come from immigrant parents and grew up really shy. I was the kid that was always afraid of getting called out by a teacher to answer a question, which seems pretty funny in hindsight. Now I plan to work a white-collor job as I’ve seen firsthand the physical and mental strain that working in construction or other blue-collor jobs do to a person. I got exposed to consulting while at USC and it peaked my interest. This summer I am doing an internship in management consulting but eventually plan to transition to fintech and work in the tech industry. To get there I plan on working a couple years in the finance industry but plan to do an MBA. Through networking and developing my skill-set, I believe a transfer into fintech would be feasible.

Both of my parents are hardworking and have instilled that in me. I have definitely taken after my dad, more than my mom as I have always seen him as a role model. Despite loving my parents, we are very different. Given I grew up in the U.S. and they grew up in a small ranch in Mexico, we have different views. I consider myself to be open minded where they are more closed minded. They value age and “elders” over everything and find it disrespectful to disagree with them while I think this isn't always the case.

Throughout most my life I was operating under my parents’ expectations. After all, they always told me that my only priority was schooling. Due to this I would solely focus on school but have gradually shifted away from that. I would say that I have developed expectations for myself.  All of my dreams are my own and I am self motivated to accomplish them.

I would consider my childhood soccer coach to be a role model of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility. He taught me mostly everything I know about the sport and would give up a lot of his free time to couch our team. He didn’t do it for the money, he did it because he wanted to share the sport he loved so much growing up and wanted to pay it forward.

I feel a special connection with lions. Lions are the only big cats that travel in groups, called prides. They are very prideful and fierce, but are loyal to their pride. When I was about 8, my family went camping to Sequoia National Park. I remember seeing the Giant Sequoia trees and feeling so small. It was my first time experiencing nature and camping but the trees are what fascinated me the most. I had never imaged or witnessed anything that big before and it was comforting in a way. It also inspired me to want to live in the woods (like I mentioned in class) as it was so peaceful and quiet.

  1. Hi Alexis,
I like how your experience with the Giant Sequoia trees influenced your desire to live in the woods! I grew up near the woods and can attest that it is much more peaceful than where we are now. I definitely need to visit the Sequoia National Park soon!

  2. Hi Alexis! I also grew up with an immigrant parent so I also looked up to my father who went from being very poor to successful in order to gain the work ethic I have today. My father is from Cuba and I understand the "close-minded" nature of Hispanics at times, especially in their work environments. I loved your connection to the animal as loyalty is a big part of my life as well and it made me see a lion in a new light.
