World We Dare To Imagine 3
Name: - Avanzando L.A.: A Los Angeles Latino Sucess Network
Your network is your net worth. Everyone has heard that saying, and it really feels like it holds true, especially at USC where the Trojan network leads to many opportunities. I personally have taken advantage of this network and the many opportunities that USC provides us. But what happens when you don’t have access to this network? What happens if you don’t see college as an attainable opportunity? Unfortunately, this is the reality for many Latinos that don’t have the proper career guidance or mentorship. That’s why Avanzando L.A, which translates to “going forward L.A.” aims to provide a mentorship program for schools all over Los Angeles that helps guide students toward success.
I have had the privilege of having mentors and older siblings to help guide me through school and university. In middle school, one of my teachers saw a lot of potential in me and guided me to apply to high schools, a concept that was foreign to me and my family. Throughout my life, I have been presented with great opportunities, which would have never happened without mentorship. I want to give these opportunities, and many more, back to the Latino community.
Avanzando L.A. hopes to partner with underserved schools throughout Los Angeles and provide mentorship, scholarships, and internships to students. Without proper guidance, many students fail to develop to their full potential and this organization wants to stop that. We hope to connect professionals from all sorts of career backgrounds to schools for career days and shadowing opportunities. Something as simple as letting these kids know that there is someone there to help can make all the difference in the trajectory of their lives.
With Avanzando we also hope to help parents understand the importance of an education. After all, it would be much easier to guide students with the full support of their parents. Having a platform to break down the plethora of opportunities available to kids will help foster the mindset of growth. Sometimes its necessary for kids to work and help out with bills, but the benefits of education (formal or informal) can help out much more in the long-run.
It’s easy to dream big when you have a support system and know all the different opportunities available to you. It's much harder to dream big when you don’t even know what's out there. If all the men in your family work in construction it's expected that you follow in their footsteps. There is nothing wrong with pursuing that career path, but there is something wrong with thinking that is the only career path available to you.
